Kind On The Inside: Becoming Your Own Safety Net

When difficult things happen, could you meet yourself with compassion and grace?

When painful feelings arise, could you validate and make space for them inside?

One of the most challenging aspects of the way we’re wired as humans is that we tend to be pretty mean to ourselves—especially when navigating something that brings up emotional pain.

We typically find it much easier to be compassionate toward others than toward ourselves!

Being kind to ourselves is often the last thing we think of doing we’re in discomfort, but it’s one of the best resources we have.

When we meet ourselves with judgment, criticism, and intolerance, life feels even more hostile.

If we can meet ourselves with warmth, compassion, and acceptance, life starts to feel a whole lot more expansive.

There’s a common misconception I hear often in my coaching practice: “If I’m kind to myself, I’ll be letting myself off the hook.”

This is an understandable fear, but the truth is:

The kinder we are to ourselves, the more quickly we can move through pain, integrate the lessons, and step into the most empowered and authentic version of who we are.

Being hard on ourselves doesn’t make us tougher. It leads to pain, avoidance, and repeating negative cycles.

Being kind to ourselves doesn’t “let us off the hook.” It leads to healthy self-reflection, evolution, and resilience.

We all have the power to become our own safety net through the ups and downs of life, and it starts with learning to treat ourselves differently than we’re accustomed to on the inside.

  • Practice some ways to shift your self-talk and start being your own safety net through moments of challenge
